Luxury yachts packed in a dusk marina, with people walking a blue-carpeted dock beside a hillside harbor.

Transport Malta has just published its Non-mandatory Safety Guidelines for Pleasure Yachts under 24m. AG Advisory had been advocating for a similar guideline for many years as we regularly receive requests from owners and captains of private yachts on how best to tackle matters such as equipment on board, manning scales and other safety matters.

It is up to each owner or captain whether to adhere to the guideline as same is non mandatory but its surely recommended as the Malta flag seems have gathered minimum safety net: indicating minimum safety equipment to be placed on board which is set to enhance the standards imposed by the EU Recreational Craft Directive in terms of construction. The Guidelines recommend following the yacht's owner manual, the general principles of good seamanship, voyage planning including planning ahead, and using common sense!

We are happy and proud that the Malta Flag took the initiative towards publishing these rules, certainly a step in the right direction. We trust they will receive widespread adoption and hope in the near future Guidelines may be released for other sizes of pleasure yachts so that the Flag can meet the needs and wants of owners, and future owners.
